Avenues available for higher studies and research in Canada (January 15, 2008)- Prof Dr R Venkatesan from Memorial University Newfoundland (MUN), Canada delivered a session to the students and faculty to inform them regarding opportunities for higher studies and research in Canada. MUN runs engineering programmes in various courses like CSE, CE, ME, EE, Ocean & Naval Architectural engineering and Offshore Oil & Gas Engineering. The population is scarce and resourceful area of Canada has enormous scope to occupy Indian scholars for R&D in the areas of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

Text Box: MoU- Recognizing the growth potential, IPEC has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MUN for the following collaborative research areas-
•	Wireless Communication and Mobile computing
•	Parallel processing Architecture and Application
•	Autonomous vehicles and Intelligent System
Faculty for pursuing PhD programmes at MUN will be encouraged.

Text Box: Key Highlights of Localization

•	Would be beneficial for multidimensional reasons- social, political, cultural and long term investment.
•	Enormous growth potential in Asia in comparison to US and Europe.
•	More languages could be developed in less time with low cost.
•	Would lead to Automation → Standardization → Process Control.

Opportunities and Challenges in Localization (January 18, 2008)- Prof Dr. Reinhard Schäler, Director, Localization Research Centre (LRC), Department of Computer Science and Information System, University of Limerick (UL), Ireland, was invited to deliver a lecture on Opportunities and Challenges of Localization. Prof Schäler is the founder and editor of Localization Focus – The international journal of Localization, a founding editor of the Journal of Specialized Translation (JoSTrans), a former member of the editorial board of Multilingual Computing and a founder and CEO of The Institute of Localization Professionals (TILP).

Prof Dr. Reinhard Schaler, Director, University of Limerick (UL), Localization Research Centre (LRC), Department of Computer Science and Information System, Ireland delivering his talk at IPEC

Initiating his talk he said that localization involves taking a product and making it linguistically and culturally appropriate to the target locale where it will be used and sold. Strengthening his views he extended that process automation may help in-

Ø      better access to technology

Ø      developing more localized digital content

Ø      favouring linguistic and cultural diversity but with less cultural dominance.

Concluding the session Director Prof. Om Vikas extended his thanks to the speaker for a very informative and interesting talk. He also proposed for collaboration as we have excellent potential for research and development in this particular aspect.

Text Box: MoU- UL (LRC) and IPEC agreed for-
•	IPEC will encourage faculty for pursuing PhD programme at LRC
•	Collaborative research and development will be carried out in areas like-
v	Multilingual Digital Content Development
v	Digital Content Translation and Adaptation Technologies: Localization Tools
v	Integrating Interoperable Translation Technologies etc.
•	UL (LRC) may invite students for the summer internship/summer school
•	Both the parties may run joint graduate diploma in Localization Technology and Global Computing

Text Box: Robo-Aids for Glass Bangle Industry in India- To develop a prototype for robotic aids with sensors to assist workers in bangle industry, working in hazardous conditions.
Innovation and Impact- Due to lack of adequate training, quality checks and documentation, the workers of bangle industry are facing various health hazards. Mechanization of few manual steps may reduce the problem/risk.
The proposed project will help automation of processes with higher productivity, better quality and health safety to workers.
Text Box: Digital Content Creation of Selected Tribal Languages of Oral Traditions- To digitize tribal languages of oral traditions to preserve the culture and identity of multilingual communities of India.
Innovation and Impact- Communication among tribals in form of story, poetry, music and paintings are not understandable by all. A digital compilation of these may preserve their language and culture.
The proposed project of digitization would convert the material available (audio, video or text) into digital form which could be stored as a digital library content and universally accessible.
Text Box: SMS Text to Speech on Mobile Phones– To enhance the prosperity by making them available such information by which the farmers could increase their productivity, market their products and be benefited from the latest trend of globalization.
Innovation and Impact- The lack of literacy among rural population is restricting them to get advantage of e-governance, e-commerce and satellite data. Development of text to speech converter on mobiles may solve the situation.
The proposed project would address literacy disability of the farmer and enable him to participate in the growth and development leading to rural prosperity.

Text Box: NEW INITIATIVESPARTICIPATION IN EURO INDIA RESEARCH CENTRE (EIRC) WORKSHOP, NEW DELHI (JANUARY 29-30, 2008)- On the invitation of Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC), New Delhi, IPEC has presented the following project proposals in   EIRC workshop-

Text Box: Localizing Content in the context of Globalization: Herbal medicines Domain- To develop a repository for localized content creation with global perspective initially for Herbal Medicines.
Innovation and Impact- Content creation in the non-English languages is often in proprietary code and non standard formats. An indigenous standard documentation may protect cultural values and support native creativity and traditional knowledge of tribals.
The proposed project would help to evolve processes and develop tools for localizing content by advanced communities/nations. Initially the project would be concentrated on herbal knowledge, widely scattered and mostly implicit knowledge.
