Let’s have a look at the various types of artificial intelligence.

Four types of AI based on functionality

1. Reactive Machines

Reactive machines are the oldest forms of Artificial Intelligence that laid the foundation of AI and have extremely limited capability to perform human tasks. It can only perform optimized actions based on the pre-programmed stimulants. It can’t store the information and improve the tasks in the future. IBM’s chess-playing supercomputer is an example of reactive machines that beat chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov in 1997.

2. Limited Memory

Unlike reactive machines, these are the systems that can learn from past experiences and from their environment to make a perfect decision. Almost all existing artificial intelligence applications like AI chatbots, virtual assistants, and self-driving cars come under limited memory AI.  

3. Theory of Mind

This is an area that is still a work in progress and researchers are trying their level best to make this a reality. Theory of mind will be the most advanced type of artificial intelligence where machines will understand humans’ needs, emotions, and thought processes and will perform human like actions. If it comes into existence it will be a big breakthrough for AI researchers.

4. Self-aware AI

This type of AI only exists theoretically or in Sci-fi movies and would be the concluding levels of AI development. Self-aware AI machines will not only understand human needs and emotions but will have emotions, thought processes, and decision-making capacity of their own. The development of this AI might take a lot of time.

Three types of AI based on capability

1. Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI)

 The most frequently used AI is ANI. Almost every type of AI ranging from simple to complex comes under ANI. ANI powered machines can do only those tasks which they are programmed to do. Some of the examples of ANI are Apple’s face recognition technology Face ID, Siri, Cortana, Google Assistant, Google Photos app, etc.

2. Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)

 AGI systems also referred to as strong AI will have multifunctional capabilities, the ability to understand, and act like humans. This type of AI is more like the “Theory of Mind” we mentioned above.

3. Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI)

Artificial Super Intelligence will be the most powerful form of AI and will even surpass human intelligence based on greater memory capabilities, faster data processing and analysis, and decision-making processes.
